First and foremost chess should be fun! This is the ethos of Ojays, the Oxfordshire Junior Squad Chess Club. We meet weekly on Thursdays between 6.15pm and 8pm, either in person or online, to develop young chess players in preparation for county tournaments and individual competitions.

Report from Joseph Conlon on the recent Oxon LJCC qualifying tournament

The 2019 Oxfordshire qualifying tournament for the London Junior Chess Championships
took place on Sunday 10th November. The tournament was held at Cheney School and
consisted of U8, U10 and U12 qualifier sections, plus an additional U18 section. There
were exactly 100 children entered across the four sections, both Oxfordshire players and
visitors from as far afield as Devon and Yorkshire.

The chess was keenly contested as players sought to qualify for the December London
finals. All sections were won by Oxfordshire Juniors!

U8 6/6 Uri Magidor-Sternberg (St Giles)

U10 5.5/6 Alex Shen (MCS)

U12 5.5/6 Jan Murawski (Ojays)

U18 6/6 Edison Xu (MCS)

Many thanks to those who helped make the tournament a success - the section
controllers Elliott Kendall in the U8s, John Place in the U10s and Lucy Broomfield in the
U12/U18s, Andrew Varney as chief arbiter, and also Ola Murawska and Yanling Cheng
who assisted in many tasks on the day.
